Hydrologic Outlook issued May 24 at 11:02AM MDT by NWS Billings MTESFBYZWarm temperatures next Monday through Wednesday will result insnowmelt in the 6000-8000 foot range of the Beartooths/Absarokas andNortheast Bighorn Mountains, resulting in high flows on areawaterways. While flooding is not imminent, many waterways couldapproach bankfull.Snow monitoring sites in the high country showed that the snowpackwas running above average for this time of year. The snowstorm onMay 23, 2024 added more snow to the mountains, and snow in the6000-8000 foot range will have an easier time melting out due towarm temperatures.High temperatures for Monday through Wednesday of next week will bein the upper 50s to around 60 degrees in the mountains/foothills.Low temperatures will remain above freezing each night in the mid30s to mid 40s. These temperatures will increase the potential for arapid snowmelt next week. Smaller streams and creeks flowing out ofthe mountains will experience rises first, with larger rivers in thelower elevations seeing increased flows a few days after the hottemperatures arrive.Those with interests along area waterways should be prepared for highwater levels and move property and livestock away from rivers,streams, and low lying areas. Bank erosion will make shorelinesunstable. Do not walk near streambanks as the underlying soil may beeroded. Do not allow children to play near the water's edge.Runoff may fill culverts, ditches, and storm drains causing water toflow over roadways potentially causing damage. Do not drive overflooded roadways, Turn Around Don't Drown.Recreationists in the mountains and foothills should be prepared forchanging conditions and use extra caution when near waterways. Flowswill be fast, and the water is cold. Fishing access sites may becomeinundated by high water.Stay tuned to the forecast. Please report any flooding to local lawenforcement and have them relay the report to the National WeatherService.
