Air Quality Alert issued June 19 at 5:04PM EDT by NWS Boston/Norton MAThe Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has issuedan Air Quality Action Day for Ground Level Ozone, from 11 AM to11 PM EDT Thursday.Unhealthy levels of ozone can cause throat irritation, coughing,chest pain, shortness of breath, increased susceptibility torespiratory infection, and aggravation of asthma and otherrespiratory ailments, especially with children and the elderly. Thesesymptoms are worsened by outdoor exercise and heavy activity.* Reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.* Take more breaks, do less intense activities.* Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.* People with asthma should follow their asthma action plans and keepquick relief medicine handy.* Schedule outdoor activities in the morning when ozone levels arelower.An Air Quality Action day means that Ground Level Ozoneconcentrations within the region may approach or exceed unhealthystandards.
