Tropical Cyclone Statement issued June 17 at 10:07PM CDT by NWS Brownsville TXHLSBROThis product covers The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas***TROPICAL STORM WATCH NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE LOWER TEXAS COAST***NEW INFORMATION---------------* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:- None* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:- A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Cameron Island, CoastalCameron, Coastal Kenedy, Coastal Willacy, Kenedy Island, andWillacy Island* STORM INFORMATION:- About 450 miles southeast of South Padre Island TX or about 480miles southeast of Port Mansfield TX- 20.8N 93.0W- Storm Intensity 40 mph- Movement North or 360 degrees at 7 mphSITUATION OVERVIEW------------------At 1000 PM CDT, a very large area of low pressure across the Bay ofCampeche is expected to move toward the north-northwest near 7 mph,with this general motion expected to continue through Tuesday. A turntoward the west-northwest is expected Tuesday night or Wednesday, andthe system is likely to approach the western Gulf coast late Wednesdayas a potential Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm. As a result ofthis uncertainty and the broad scope of the low, Tropical Storm Watchesare now in effect for coastal waters and island to coastal portions ofKenedy, Willacy and Cameron counties for Potential Tropical Cyclone 1.Regardless of tropical development, the main hazard across the lowerTexas coast into Deep South Texas remains flooding rainfall ofgenerally 4-8 inches, with localized rainfall amounts up to 10 ormore inches, especially towards the coast. A reasonable worst case of15 inches is possible. Beach and marine conditions will becomedangerous as well, with coastal flooding of up to 2 feet possible,deadly rip currents, high surf, gusty winds, and low visibility inheavy rainfall. The strongest winds of this tropical system mayreside well north of any circulation and extend further. Tropicalwind gusts up to 40 kts are possible offshore and potentially justinto coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron counties.POTENTIAL IMPACTS-----------------* FLOODING RAIN:Prepare for dangerous rainfall flooding having possible significantimpacts across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas. Potentialimpacts include:- Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt several evacuations andrescues.- Arroyos and larger creeks may quickly become swollen with swiftcurrents and overspill their banks in a few places, especiallyin usually vulnerable spots. Small streams, creeks, canals, andditches overflow.- Flood waters can enter some structures or weaken foundations.Several places may experience expanded areas of rapidinundation at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainageareas. Some streets and parking lots take on moving water asstorm drains and retention ponds overflow. Driving conditionsbecome hazardous. Some road and bridge closures.* SURGE:Prepare for locally hazardous surge having possible limited impactsacross the lower Texas coast. Potential impacts in this area include:- Localized inundation with storm surge flooding mainly alongimmediate shorelines and in low-lying spots, or in areasfarther inland near where higher surge waters move ashore.- Sections of near-shore roads and exposed parking lots couldbecome covered with some surge water. Driving conditionsdangerous in places where surge water covers the road.- Moderate beach erosion. Heavy surf also breaching dunes, mainlyin usually vulnerable locations. Strong rip currents.- Minor damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers. A fewsmall craft broken away from moorings.Elsewhere across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas, littleto no impact is anticipated.* WIND:Prepare for hazardous wind having possible limited impacts across thelower Texas coast and coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy, andCameron counties. Potential impacts in this area include:- Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchoredmobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about.- Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped oruprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees areshallow rooted. Some fences and roadway signs blown over.- A few roads impassable from debris, particularly within urbanor heavily wooded places. Hazardous driving conditions onbridges and other elevated roadways.- Scattered power and communications outages.Elsewhere across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas, littleto no impact is anticipated.* TORNADOES:Little to no additional impacts are anticipated at this time acrossThe Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS----------------------------------* EVACUATIONS:Follow the advice of local officials.* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:When making safety and preparedness decisions, do not focus on theexact forecast track since hazards such as flooding rain, damaging windgusts, storm surge, and tornadoes extend well away from the center ofthe storm.If you live in a place particularly vulnerable to flooding, such asnear the ocean, in a low-lying or poor drainage area, or near analready swollen arroyo, large creek, or the Rio Grande, plan to moveto safe shelter on higher ground.Closely monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio and local newsoutlets for official storm information. Listen for possible changesto the forecast.There is a threat from tornadoes with this storm. Have multiple waysto receive Tornado Warnings.
