Tropical Cyclone Statement issued June 18 at 3:55AM CDT by NWS Brownsville TXHLSBROThis product covers The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas***TROPICAL STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT ***NEW INFORMATION---------------* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:- The Tropical Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Tropical StormWarning for Cameron Island, Coastal Cameron, Coastal Kenedy,Coastal Willacy, Kenedy Island, and Willacy Island* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:- A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Cameron Island,Coastal Cameron, Coastal Kenedy, Coastal Willacy, KenedyIsland, and Willacy Island* STORM INFORMATION:- About 420 miles southeast of South Padre Island TX or about 460miles southeast of Port Mansfield TX- 21.3N 93.0W- Storm Intensity 40 mph- Movement North or 360 degrees at 6 mphSITUATION OVERVIEW------------------At 400 AM CDT, a very large area of low pressure across the Bay ofCampeche is expected to move toward the north-northwest near 7 mph,with this general motion expected to continue through today. A turntoward the west-northwest is expected tonight or tomorrow, and thesystem is likely to approach the western Gulf coast late tomorrow asa potential Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm. As a result ofthis uncertainty, timing, and the broad scope of the low, TropicalStorm Warnings are now in effect for coastal waters and island tocoastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy and Cameron counties forPotential Tropical Cyclone 1.Regardless of tropical development, the main hazard across the lowerTexas coast into Deep South Texas remains flooding rainfall ofgenerally 4-8 inches, with localized rainfall amounts up to 10 ormore inches, especially towards the coast. A reasonable worst case of15 inches is possible. Beach and marine conditions will becomedangerous as well, with coastal flooding of up to 2 feet possible,deadly rip currents, high surf, gusty winds, and low visibility inheavy rainfall. The strongest winds of this tropical system mayreside well north of any circulation and extend further. Tropicalwind gusts up to 40 kts are possible offshore and potentially justinto coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron counties.POTENTIAL IMPACTS-----------------* FLOODING RAIN:Prepare for dangerous rainfall flooding having possible significantimpacts across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas. Potentialimpacts include:- Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt several evacuations andrescues.- Arroyos and larger creeks may quickly become swollen with swiftcurrents and overspill their banks in a few places, especiallyin usually vulnerable spots. Small streams, creeks, canals, andditches overflow.- Flood waters can enter some structures or weaken foundations.Several places may experience expanded areas of rapidinundation at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainageareas. Some streets and parking lots take on moving water asstorm drains and retention ponds overflow. Driving conditionsbecome hazardous. Some road and bridge closures.* SURGE:Prepare for locally hazardous surge having possible limited impactsacross the lower Texas coast. Potential impacts in this area include:- Localized inundation with storm surge flooding mainly alongimmediate shorelines and in low-lying spots, or in areasfarther inland near where higher surge waters move ashore.- Sections of near-shore roads and exposed parking lots couldbecome covered with some surge water. Driving conditionsdangerous in places where surge water covers the road.- Moderate beach erosion. Heavy surf also breaching dunes, mainlyin usually vulnerable locations. Strong rip currents.- Minor damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers. A fewsmall craft broken away from moorings.Elsewhere across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas, littleto no impact is anticipated.* WIND:Prepare for hazardous wind having possible limited impacts across thelower Texas coast and coastal portions of Kenedy, Willacy, andCameron counties. Potential impacts in this area include:- Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchoredmobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about.- Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped oruprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees areshallow rooted. Some fences and roadway signs blown over.- A few roads impassable from debris, particularly within urbanor heavily wooded places. Hazardous driving conditions onbridges and other elevated roadways.- Scattered power and communications outages.Elsewhere across The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas, littleto no impact is anticipated.* TORNADOES:Protect against a tornado event having possible limited impactsacross The Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas. Potential impactsinclude:- The occurrence of isolated tornadoes can hinder the executionof emergency plans during tropical events.- A few places may experience tornado damage, along with powerand communications disruptions.- Locations could realize roofs peeled off buildings, chimneystoppled, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned,large tree tops and branches snapped off, shallow-rooted treesknocked over, moving vehicles blown off roads, and small boatspulled from moorings.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS----------------------------------* EVACUATIONS:Follow the advice of local officials.* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:Now is the time to complete all preparations to protect life andproperty in accordance with your emergency plan. Ensure you are in asafe location before the onset of strong winds or possible flooding.If you are relocating to safe shelter, leave as early as possible.Allow extra time to reach your destination. Many roads and bridgeswill be closed once strong winds arrive. Even if you are not in a surge-prone area, you could findyourself cutoff by flood waters during and after the storm. Heedevacuation orders issued by the local authorities.Rapidly rising flood waters are deadly. If you are in a flood-pronearea, consider moving to higher ground. Never drive through a floodedroadway. Remember, turn around don't drown!If a Tornado Warning is issued for your area, be ready to shelterquickly, preferably away from windows and in an interior room notprone to flooding. If driving, scan the roadside for quick shelteroptions.If in a place that is vulnerable to high wind, such as near largetrees, a manufactured home, upper floors of a high-rise building, oron a boat, consider moving to a safer shelter before the onset ofstrong winds or flooding.Closely monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather radio or local news outletsfor official storm information.
