For the Extreme Heat Watch, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 120 possible. * WHERE...All of Deep South Texas, excepting the barrier islands * WHEN...For the Extreme Heat Warning, until 8 PM CDT this evening. For the Extreme Heat Watch, from Friday morning through Friday evening. * IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...While overnight heat indices will not meet Extreme Heat Warning or Heat Advisory criteria, there will be little relief from the heat. Heat indices are expected to remain above 90 degrees tonight. Continue to stay hydrated, use air conditioning when possible (or stay with a friend or family member who has air conditioning), and check on those who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay informed. If you do not have air conditioning in your home or lack shelter, you can call 211 or visit http://www.211texas.org for assistance locating appropriate shelter from the heat.
